Before You Buy A Parrot Birds are an investment - not only in money but in time. With some birds having the mental capacity of a 3 year old it can be tough keeping them occupied and preventing mental issues that stem from boredom. Your birds cage should have enough room for them to stretch and flap their wings, so don't stuff the cage full of toys. You should buy the largest cage suitable for your bird. Toys are important for parrots (even canaries need them), they keep their brain active and allows some exercise. Keep in mind that you need to buy several toys and rotate them every week. You can only put a puzzle together so many times before you get sick of it (and want to scream). When buying perches for your bird you need to buy several sizes to exercise the feet. A bird standing on one size perch every day for their entire life will lead to arthritis and it's just downright painful. Try rope perches and natural manzanita wood perches. Rope is soft and the manzanita varies in sizes and is all natural. A bird stand should also be on your list. The stand will allow for your bird to come spend time with the family any place in the house. Most stands have two cups for food and water, a large area for catching seed and poo, and places to attach toys. And last but not least - spend time with your bird and have fun. You'll notice less screaming and irritability if they're allowed to spend time with their flock.
