Collecting Art Pottery
Art pottery is not only great for collecting; it can be a great investment too! McCoy, Shawnee, Roseville, and Rookwood are just a few of the many types of art pottery that became popular in the 1920's. Roseville and Rookwood were considered two of the finer art pottery companies and flourished in the 20's. These pieces were pricey for their time, and most were given as wedding gifts to wealthier brides. Art pottery has made a comeback as a wonderful collectable item. Provided they're kept safe and in good condition the pottery only grows in value every year. Finding pottery to add to your collection can be tricky. Some get lucky and find that rare piece of art pottery at an estate sale, but most are limited to antique stores and auction sites. If you're a beginner you need to keep an eye out for fakes. When pottery started to become popular as a collector item and not just a household item, other companies (mainly from China) started producing replicas. These fakes flooded the market and looked a lot like the originals, but most can be spotted if you know what to look for. A fake Roseville, for example, often has badly painted decorations with odd colors that look nothing like a typical Roseville piece. Don't rely on the mark on the bottom of these pieces...learn what that piece should look like, and then you can look at the mark. Take your time expanding your collection of pottery, but most of all enjoy these treasures that grow in value every day!
