Water Bottles For Birds - Do they work?
Water bottles for birds are modeled after the bottles you'd use for your rabbit or hamster, with a few important differences - Birds use their beaks to explore, which means they chew on whatever looks interesting. Bird water bottles are made out of all glass, with the exception of the tip which is metal. Plastic on water bottles would be very harmful for your bird as it could be chewed up and swallowed easily. The water bottle connects on the outside of the cage with a heavy duty "almost beak proof" metal holder. The majority of pet birds have that little cup of water sitting in their cage, quickly gathering seed and feces. These water bottles can completely eliminate that problem. However, these birds also take baths in their water dishes so you will need to substitute that for some tub time or sink time once or twice a week (or more if your bird loves water). If you decide to give these bottles a try, be patient. Attach the water bottle to the cage near your bird's current water dish. Your bird will have no idea what the bottle is, more than likely it's a monster out to kill him! Encourage your bird to drink from the bottle by tapping your finger against the tip, getting some water on your finger and then touching your bird's beak. This will show your bird that the bottle doesn't hurt you, and it's also giving water. This of course can be hard to do with finches, canaries and parakeets. With these small birds, and birds that are not hand fed or hand tamed, just mount the bottle near the water dish, most birds figure it out on their own. It is very important to keep your bird's water dish in at all times until you see him drinking from the bottle. This could take a day, or it could take a month. Try to avoid cheap bird water bottles made out of plastic. These may be inexpensive, but they can be very dangerous. Plastic bottles can be chewed, broken easily and cannot be truly sanitized. Plastic bottles will also break and leak, causing you to have to buy several in your bird's lifetime. One purchase of a glass bottle will last forever if cared for properly. A bird water bottle is not only convenient; it's cleaner and healthier for your bird!
